Spirit Filled Living

Spirit Filled Living

Introduction

Call to Worship----- "Waymaker"

Welcome and Prayer

Galatians 2:20. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. - ESV

Worship Through Praise----- "Come Thou Fount"

The Apostle Paul expresses a similar sentiment in-Romans 7:15-25  (15) For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. (16) Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. (17) So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. (18) For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. (19) For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. (20) Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. (21) So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. (22) For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, (23) but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. (24) Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? (25) Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. - ESV

God's desire is not that we live a dual life with conflict and impurities----

Galatians 4:6-7. (6) And because you are sons (daughter, children), God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" (7) So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. - ESV

Worship Through Praise----- "Do It Again"

2 Corinthians 5:17 -- Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. (Note- Or creature) The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. - ESV

How can this new life come to be?

John 14:15-21  (15) If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (16) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, (17) even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. (18) I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. (19) Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. (20) In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. (21) Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." - ESV

Prayer- Christ will manifest himself in us today!

In the one corner wearing "the-flesh" is the natural man

Galatians 5:19-21. (19) Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, (20) idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, (21) envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do (Note- Or make a practice of doing) such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. - ESV

Augutine used to pray,"Lord , deliver me from that evil man, myself."

Charles Spurgeon quote---All the fire which the devil can bring from hell could do us little harm if we had not so much fuel in our nature.

Living in the state of the natural man is not an acquired taste. We are born with a rebellious myopic spirit. It doesn't take any supernatural effort to teach us to sin. We don't need a teacher at all. No one says, "I want to be jealous, I think I will buy a book about the seven best practices of highly effective jealous people." Or how about buying a book entitled, "anger for dummies." Step by step instructions to develop anger issues written by the worlds most angry people.

This able competitor is very well trained and equipped for the fight. He comes to the fight in tip-top shape and has an enormous fan base to cheer him on.

How would you prepare to fight this foe? Are you afraid of him? Is it easier to compromise and befriend him than to fight?

The Old Testament approach was to be disciplined in the Law of God. .....

In the other corner, "The Holy Spirit of God"

He was sent by God the Father, he was made available through God the Son and he comes with power. His strategy isn't to fight the strengths of his opponent but to neutralize them and replace them leaving his opponent defeated.

He produces eternal fruit that will never perish.

Galatians 5:22-23 (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. - ESV

Matthew 22:36-39  (36) "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" (37) And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. (38) This is the great and first commandment. (39) And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. - ESV

Godly

Brotherly

Inwardly

The Winner!

Galatians 5:24 (24) And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. - ESV

A word of caution! It is important to keep it real.

Caution!! The iceberg effect.

If in doubt pray; Psalm 139:23-24. (23) Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! (24) And see if there be any grievous way in me,  and lead me in the way everlasting! - ESV

Application

Archie Moore a light heavy weight boxing champion, once got knocked down early in a fight. He got back up and won the match by knock-out. Afterwards a reporter asked him, “Archie, what were you thinking while you were on the canvas?” He said, “I thought, Hey, I’m the champ! I don’t belong here!” If you're down, remember you’ve been championed by Jesus Christ. So, get up, you don’t belong down there.”

Don't be an iceberg

Let The Spirit reign.

Conclusion and exhortation

Have I the true and only gospel? I've been saved by grace, through faith, in Christ, according to God's Holy Word, by the power of the Holy Spirit who now dwells within me.

Will I pray."Holy Spirit continue to work in and through me for my good, the good of others and for God's Glory."

Revelation 3:20

(20) Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.- ESV

Give invitation- If you hear Christ knocking........

Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and there is nothing that I can do to save myself. I confess my complete helplessness to forgive my own sin or to work my way to heaven. At this moment I trust in Christ alone as the One who bore my sin when He died on the cross. I believe that He did all that will ever be necessary for me to stand in your holy presence. I thank you that Christ was raised from the dead as a guarantee of my own resurrection. I, right now, place my trust in Him. I am grateful that He has promised to receive me despite my many sins and failures. Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit. Thank you for hearing this prayer! Thank you for saving me! In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Time of Response----Meditate on, "I've been crucified with Christ."
